When you are feeling panicked, stressed, or in a state of fear, take a deep breath and practise these gratitude steps.
- Keep a Gratitude Journal: I suggest buying yourself a journal for the new year. In this, write 1-3 things you are grateful for every day. This will not only help document the year but it will make you become appreciative of the little things. Because of this, you will naturally begin to notice more positivity in your life.
- Share Compliments: If you are thinking of a loved one, why not tell them? If you love a randomer’s earrings, let them know. And if someone has done something you really appreciate, take a moment to express that. This is sharing gratitude with another and instantly improves both of your moods as well as building connection. (Just make sure it’s genuine…)
- Say ‘Thank You’: These two words are an instant expression of gratitude for something or someone. We tend to use this expression flippantly, so make sure to really mean it when you say it. And allow yourself to accept praise, love and compliments by saying ‘thank you’ instead of dismissing them! (Because you’re worth it)
- Be in The Moment: Instead of rushing ahead to next month or next year, take a minute to look around you and think ‘what is good in this moment?’ Notice your surroundings and you’ll start to notice little ordinary things to be extraordinarily grateful for; whether it’s the sky, kids laughing, a cute dog or the taste of your coffee. Let yourself enjoy it all!
- Practise Self-Love: Get comfortable with using positive language to speak about yourself. Don’t always focus on your past mistakes or your ideal future self, but think – what do I like about me today? This can be your health, personality traits, physical qualities, something you accomplished today or simply deciding to get out of bed and try to appreciate yourself!
