Fit Mind by Pat Divilly

Ever felt sudden intense emotions and wondered where is this coming from?

Ever thought ‘here we go again’ when ANOTHER inconvenient incident occurs, or wondered ‘why me’.

Does it feel like there are characters poking around in your mind criticizing your every move? Well, that’s cos there are. Pat Divilly compares emotions to characters. He asks us to face these characters and inner demons rather than repress them. We must take time to accept they are apart of us and get to know them. Then it will be easier to laugh at the ridiculous thoughts and tell them to ‘shut up’.

‘Fit Mind’ is an 8 week guide to self development and wellbeing. Each week, the reader learns about an emotion and completes exercises to help familiarize themselves with who they are outside of their conditioned thinking patterns.

Divilly gives weekly challenges including: cold showers, daily meditation, dancing for fun on your own. This really tackles what my blog is based on: challenging ourselves outside of our comfort zones by embracing a good kind of scary to flourish into who we’re meant to be.

Divilly is honest with his personal struggles, making this book relatable and enjoyable to read. It isn’t a generic mental health book filled with toxic positivity. He doesn’t pretend buying this book will fix you. Divilly honestly expresses the never ending mountain climb when obtaining wellness – it’s an everyday journey rather than something you can change at the flick of the switch.

Though it may sound tough, Divilly reassures the reader that with long journeys comes joy and fulfillment. He includes anecdotes, visual charts and creative narrative tools to help the reader.

If I can recommend 1 mental health and wellness book: it’s this one. I found it eye opening in how my old thinking patterns control a lot of what I do. It forced me to take a good look at how I react to my emotions. This book helped break limiting beliefs by encouraging challenges and discomfort.
