It’s Valentines Day and for many readers out there that means spending time with their partners! For others it means getting nice gifts, and for many singletons it’s just another day in the year; a day you get to pig out, have a cry and eat a tub of Ben& Jerry’s without a care in the world! Valentines Day is just another day in the year; only a day where we really notice the extra efforts made by a loved one or pay attention to the kind gestures that are always there. It almost seems like some sort of competition when people are flaunting presents all over the internet, asking “what did they get you?”, “What did you guys do?”. This puts enormous pressure on lots of people and relationships! I think this is silly and the day should really just be about making someone you care about happy! Anyway, I decided to write a random poem in the middle of the night about this day that means so much to some people and absolutely nothing to others. I also really like rhyming so had a bit of fun attempting to do that throughout the whole poem!! 🙂
Happy Valentines Day,
I forgot it was even here,
Just another day,
of the 365 in the whole year.
So what even is ‘Valentines’?
What does this day mean?
I’ll explain it in a rhyme,
I’ll give you a low-down on the scene.
My phone is filled with pictures of flowers,
Michael Kors watches& expensive gifts,
Wasting my time& Wasting their hours..
Do you think I really give a shit?
As much as I sound like scrooge
I’m a strong believer of love& Kindness too,
Sharing it to the whole wide world is ‘cray’,
wouldn’t it mean more if you shared it with ‘bae’?
Presents, Money & Material goods,
Is that really how to measure love?
Kindness, compassion & actions-
If only the world understood..
A day of thoughtfulness- what it really means,
To be caught in a moment that will remain unseen,
To give someone you care for your time,
A Partner, friend, stranger- caring isn’t a crime.
So today think of others, not only yourself,
Think of those you love,
not what to show off on your shelf,
Consider those with loved ones above & those
with nobody but their self.
A day of roses and hearts-
all the red color..
Loved ones make the extra effort to not be apart,
But why should this day be different to the 364 others?
So happy Valentines’ Day Rafferty’s readers! Whatever you do, make sure to have a lovely day. Tell someone you care about how you feel, take chances and remember small acts of kindness could mean nothing to you but the whole wide world to somebody else! I hope you enjoyed this poem that surprisingly didn’t start with ‘Roses are Red..’ and didn’t proceed to state the interesting fact that Violets are blue (as if we don’t know that already!) Keep on the look-out for the many more poems I have to come!
Over and out – Saoirse.
